For most families in Hillsboro and Greater Cincinnati it is the least disruptive way to gain a bedroom, an office, a gym or somewhere the teenagers can go.

What basement finishing involves
Depending on where your basement starts, the work usually includes some mix of:
- Framing, insulation, drywall and ceiling finishes to turn raw space into rooms.
- A basement bathroom — which is mostly a plumbing question, and worth asking about early.
- A kitchenette or bar: cabinetry, counter, sink, and appliance hookups.
- Lighting and electrical, including recessed cans, switching, and outlets in sensible places.
- Flooring that suits a below-grade room.
- Egress, doors and walkout access where the layout allows it.
- Painting, trim and the finish carpentry that makes it read as part of the house.
Not every basement should be fully finished
One of the basements in our gallery is painted white top to bottom — walls, ceiling joists and all — with a sealed grey floor, strip lighting and wall mirrors. It became a studio. It is bright, it is open, and it deliberately never got a dropped ceiling.
Sometimes that is the right answer: paint, light and floor, without the framing. It costs a fraction of a full finish and it gets the space in use this year. We will tell you which one your basement wants.
